DVD Burner Sale and Information

DVD burners are similar to CD burners in the way they operate. Even the disc sizes have the same diameter. The major difference is the capacity. With a DVD burner, you can record over 4GB on a single disc.

DVD Media Capacities

Because DVD media can use multiple layers to store data, you can have varying capacities. It's also possible for discs to use both sides. The following table shows the popular types of discs and their capacities:

Disc Type Storage (GB = 1 billion bytes) Hours of High Quality Video
Single Sided, Single Layer 4.7GB about 2 Hours
Single Sided, Dual Layer 8.54GB about 4 hours
Double Sided, Single Layer 9.4GB about 4.5 hours
Double Sided, Dual Layer 17.08GB over 8 hours

You may have noticed that the dual layer discs aren't exactly double the capacity of the single layered ones. This is because the capacities on each layer are a bit less. This is done to prevent interference between the layers.

DVD Formats

You have DVD-R and DVD+R. The difference is of a low level technical nature which you really don't need to be concerned about. The high level problem is that some DVD-ROM drives and set top DVD players have trouble reading one or both formats. The solution is simply to get a dual format DVD burner and find out which format works best with your DVD player. As you will see, dual format DVD players are very affordable.
